On Friday, December 1, 23andMe Holding Co. ("23andMe") announced that a significant number of files concerning users' ancestry had been stolen by hackers as a direct result of a data breach. The company claimed that based on their internal investigation, hackers had accessed 0.1% of its customer database. Since 23andMe reported in its most recent annual report that it has "more than 14 million customers worldwide,” that would mean that 0.1% would equal around 14,000 individuals were affected by the data breach.
However, the company also said that by accessing those accounts, the hackers were also able to access “a significant number of files containing profile information about other users’ ancestry that such users chose to share when opting into 23andMe’s DNA Relatives feature.” The company did not elaborate on what the "significant number" amounted to or how these other users were affected by the data breach.
Additionally, late on Saturday, a spokesperson for 23andMe, Katie Watson, informed TechCrunch that hackers had gained access to the individual details of roughly 5.5 million individuals who had chosen to participate in the DNA Relatives feature. The feature allowed customers to automatically share part of their data with other users. The illegally obtained information included the person's name, birth year, label of relationships, percentage of DNA shared with relatives, ancestry reports, and the user's self-reported location.
23andMe verified that another set of 1.4 million people who consented to DNA Relatives also had their Family The profile data accessed, which included display names, connections, birth year, self-reported place, and if the user agreed to share their details, the spokesperson said.
Thus, the 23andMe data breach is estimated to have impacted approximately seven million people, which is equivalent to half of the 14 million customers reported by 23andMe.
