On May 13, 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) called for an immediate ARC airbag recall of a staggering 67 million airbag inflators manufactured by ARC Automotive, Inc. of Knoxville, TN. In a letter to ARC, NHTSA stated: "NHTSA is issuing this recall request letter to notify you that the Agency has tentatively concluded that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists in the frontal driver and passenger air bag inflators under investigation that were produced before installation of borescopes on all toroidal inflator manufacturing lines in January 2018 (“subject inflators”), and to demand that ARC issue a Part 573 Recall Report addressing that safety defect causing the Exploding ARC airbags."
NHTSA states that the arc airbag recall is necessary and justified because two people have been killed in the United States and Canada and at least seven others injured by the defective ARC airbag inflators, which can explode with too much force and expel shrapnel. The explosions, which first occurred in 2009, have continued as recently as this year. A special order from the NHTSA asks multiple questions about whether ARC expects any of its inflators to blow apart in the future, and whether it has notified customers about the risk. On May 13, 2023, the NHTSA called for an immediate ARC airbag recall of 67 million airbag inflators manufactured by ARC due to defective ARC airbag inflators which can blow apart in the future, and whether ask ARC whether it has notified customers about the risk. The ARC airbag recall of the ARC airbag inflators is currently only taking place in the United States. However, NHTSA still believes due to the number of incidents, a broad Exploding ARC recall is necessary. WHAT IS AN ARC AIRBAG?
Airbags are estimated to have reduced accident fatalities by up to 30 percent. So, while airbags provide an excellent service in reducing the injuries drivers and passengers receive during a car accident––when failing to perform correctly, airbags can cause more harm than good. If an airbag fails to activate during a crash, or if they deploy by mistake, the people in the vehicle may become seriously injured or even killed.
WHAT IS CAUSING THE DEFECTIVE ARC AIRBAG INFLATORS TO RESULT IN EXPLODING ARC AIRBAGS?
The defective ARC airbag inflators are similar to hazardous inflators manufactured by the now-bankrupt Takata Corporation of Japan. Both of the devices use a compound known as ammonium nitrate in order to create a small explosion to inflate the bags in a crash, and both can blow apart metal canisters that contain the chemical. However, unlike the Takata airbags, ARC only uses ammonium nitrate in the defective ARC airbag inflators as a secondary method to inflate the airbags.
Ammonium nitrate can deteriorate when exposed repeatedly to high temperatures and humidity, and it can burn too fast, making explosions larger. ARC PUSHES BACK ON ARC AIRBAG RECALL AND EXPLODING ARC AIRBAGS
Despite nine incidents linked to their airbags, ARC denies any issues with their products. These instances, reported by the NHTSA since 2009, resulted in a range of injuries and two fatalities. ARC responded to the NHTSA's claims on May 11, 2023, strongly contesting the agency's preliminary conclusion that a safety fault exists in the 67 million driver and passenger inflators.
ARC insists that their internal investigations reveal no correlation between the accidents and any recurring issues with their airbags, including Exploding ARC airbags. Their extensive product testing also showed zero failure points. While ARC indeed disagrees with the NHTSA's outlook, they do not blame other car companies who choose to recall vehicles as a safety precaution. DANGER POSED BY THE DEFECTIVE ARC AIRBAG INFLATORS AND THE EXPLODING ARC AIRBAGS
ARC Drivers are potentially at risk of being injured or killed by thedefective ARC Airbag Inflators causing the Exploding ARC airbags. An Exploding Airbag will cause Metal shards and shrapnel to be propelled at high speeds, causing severe cuts, burns, eye injuries, torn arteries, broken bones, and death. Regardless of fault in an accident, or the number of parties involved, those injured by the Exploding ARC airbags may still have a claim.
