The Philips CRAP Recall

​The Philips CPAP recall is related to the polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) sound abatement foam used in the affected devices. The PE-PUR foam can reportedly degrade into small particles that can be inhaled or ingested, or emit chemicals that pose health risks including possible carcinogenic effects.

Why Were Philips CPAP Machines Recalled?

Philips issued a voluntary recall of some of its CPAP machines and ventilators over concerns the PE-PUR sound abatement foam could degrade and become toxic, and potentially cause cancer.
When the foam deteriorates, tiny particles and gases may be inhaled or ingested. CPAP users may experience chemical exposure and develop health issues such as headache, hypersensitivity, irritation, nausea, vomiting, and potential carcinogenic effects.

​Philips reports that the complaint rate for health issues for the recalled products was just 0.03% in 2020. The company says it has not received any reports regarding patients who have been affected by chemical emissions but decided to initiate a voluntary recall to ensure patient safety.

“The foam degradation may be exacerbated by use of unapproved cleaning methods, such as ozone, and high heat and high humidity environments may also contribute to foam degradation,” Philips said.

What Should I Do If I am Using a Recalled Philips CPAP Machine?

If you are using one of the recalled Philips CPAP machines, Philips says you should speak with your physician to figure out the best options for continued treatment.

“Philips recognizes that alternate ventilator options for therapy may not exist or may be severely limited for patients who require a ventilator for life-sustaining therapy, or in cases where disruption is unacceptable,” the recall notice states.

“In these situations, and at the discretion of the treating clinical team, the benefit of continued usage of these ventilator devices may outweigh the risks.”

​The company says it plans to replace the PE-PUR foam in the recalled CPAP machines with a new material as soon as it has acquired the necessary regulatory clearances.
